About the Authors

Barrie Axford is Professor of Politics at Oxford Brookes University and Director of Research in the School of Social Sciences and Law. His publications include The Global System (1995), Unity and Diversity in the New Europe, joint editor (2000), The New Media and Politics, joint editor,(2000). He is working on books on Democracy and Democratisation, Britain and Globalisation, and Practical Citizenship. Current research includes: theories and practice of globalisation, networks and borders in the Global System, European governance and the information society, processes of democratisation, political communications, new media and politics.

Gary K. Browning is Professor of Politics at Oxford Brookes University. He has written many articles and books on political theory and the history of political thought including Understanding Contemporary Society (Sage, 2000) (ed.), Lyotard and the End of Grand Narratives (UWP, 2000),Hegel and the History of Political Philosophy (Palgrave, 1999), Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit: A Reappraisal(ed) and Plato and Hegel: Two Modes of Philosophising abut Politics (Garland, 1991). He has joint edited the PSA journal Politics and is currently the General Editor of Contemporary Political Theory(Palgrave). He is currently working on monographs on Critical Political Economy, Democracy and Collingwood.

Alan Grant is a Principal Lecturer and Head of Department of Politics at Oxford Brookes University. He has research interests in a number of areas in American politics. These include the electoral process, with particular reference to the financing of elections and proposals for reform; the role of political action committees; the territorial distribution of power with the US federal system and recent movements to devolve power to the states. He is the author of The American Political Process, the seventh edition of which is due to be published by Routledge in 2003 He is also the co-author and editor of Contemporary American Politics (Dartmouth 1995) and American Politics: 2000 and Beyond (Ashgate 2000) and co-author of The 'Politics Today' Companion to American Government (Manchester University Press 2002).

Richard Huggins is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and Deputy Head of School, Academic Affairs, at Oxford Brookes University. His research interests currently include EU telecommunications and media policy; political communication and marketing in the UK, Italy and the USA; democracy, media and technology. He is currently involved in an externally funded research project concerning fear of crime and the impact of CCTV for Oxford City Council and Thames Valley Police.

Ben Rosamond is Reader in Politics and International Studies and Principal Research Fellow in the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation at Warwick University. He has published many articles on the subject of globalisation and Europeanisation. His published books include Globalisation and the European Union (2002) and Theories of European Integration (2000). His research interests include theoretical approaches to regional integration; globalisation and European integration; British political economy in European and global contexts; the sociology of knowledge and disciplinary pathologies in political science.

John Turner is a Principal Lecturer in Politics at Oxford Brookes University. He has recently completed a major research project on `The Tories and Europe', tracing the development of factionalism over the issue in recent years. He has also been commissioned to carry out a research project for the Journal of Marketing Management into political marketing by political parties at the next general election.
