Unit 1
Exercise 1
Cities in Germany
Using the map on page 6 as a guide, select four of the cities listed (each from a different ‘Land’) and collect information from the internet or other sources on the city, its population and its main attractions.
A search engine such as German Google (www.google.de) would be useful.
Produce a brief report in English on the chosen cities.
Exercise 2
Numbers
Working in pairs, each student prepares a list of 20 numbers and reads out the numbers alternately in German and in English. The other student gives the English equivalent of the German number heard, and vice-versa. The students should try to speed up the process as they proceed through the exercise. This can get confusing but is very entertaining!

three hotels (give them appropriate names) Decide on a map location for someone asking directions.

or
- working on your own, write down the directions to each of the locations.
Exercise 3
Directions
Using the map you have produced, write down three sets of directions which are true, and three which are false. Now hand them to another student, who has to say which directions are correct and which not.
Exercise 4
Travel arrangements
Using the German railways information website (www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de), familiarize yourself with the layout and the system for getting information, and then check the connection and travel times between various German cities. You will find this a very informative and useful site.
Once you are familiar with the site, try to answer the following questions:
1) What is the typical journey time between:
- Hamburg and Stuttgart
- Saarbrücken and Berlin
- Munich and Freiburg
- Rostock and Bremen
Plan a return route from Munich to Neunkirchen ( Saarland), leaving Munich at about nine in the morning, and note the details of where and when you need to change trains. The website can also be used as the basis for effective ‘real-time’ role play, with one student using the site to answer travel queries from another student.

Unit 5

Booking accommodation
There are many hotel reservation websites available, but some of them default to the English language, which is not very helpful if you wish to improve your German!
One helpful site to try is www.expedia.de which will give students excellent practice in searching for accommodation using German.
A further useful site is www.ehotel.de
Make a list of your requirements:
- location
- duration of stay
- maximum price
- required facilities (in-hotel restaurant; car park; pool, etc.).
Then use the search facility to locate a suitable hotel. Make lists of the key vocabulary as you do this – it is an excellent way of expanding your range of expression.

The health service in Germany
Using the internet or ‘hard copy’ resources, students can be given the task of researching aspects of health care in Germany. If use is made of a good search engine, then entry of key words such as ‘Krankenkasse’, ‘Kur’ or ‘Gesundheit’ should throw up some interesting results.
One task could be to draw up a summary of the key features of German healthcare, compared and contrasted with our system.
Exercise 2

Rewrite the following sentences in the perfect tense, paying particular attention to the choice of auxiliary verb (‘haben’ or ‘sein’). Some of these are fairly easy, some are difficult!

Unit 7
Exercise 1
German universities
Try to get some facts and figures about German universities (location; size; number of faculties; subjects offered). This can be done quite easily by keyword search on the internet.
Students might find it interesting to compare the key features of the German system with that in the UK.
There are several good starting points on the internet, including:
www.uni-nordverbund.de
This site gives access to the websites of numerous universities in the north of Germany.
Or students could simply enter the name of a city together with the prefix ‘uni-’, for example:
www.uni-hamburg.de
This will give direct access to the University of Hamburg website.
Exercise 2
Finding accommodation
Look at the ads on page 156. Using a German newspaper in hard copy or online, locate similar advertisements, and for each one write out in full the abbreviated words. This is a good way of testing your understanding of the language and of expanding your vocabulary.
Exercise 3 (see also Übung 17)
Imperfect tense: weak verbs
Rewrite the following sentences in the imperfect tense:
Um wieviel Uhr öffnet der Laden?
- Jürgen bestellt ein Bier und eine Bockwurst mit Kartoffelsalat.

Rewrite the following sentences in indirect speech (i.e. in the appropriate tense/form of the subjunctive), prefacing them with: Er hat gesagt …

Making use of copies of German newspapers or the internet, locate a number of job ads and draw up a list of useful expressions (German, together with English equivalent). If the class works in pairs, each pair on a different set of ads, you will produce a significant list of terms related to employment and job seeking. These can then be used in the subsequent exercises.
Exercise 2
Using the ads you have found for Exercise 1 above, copy/print them with some of the nouns removed, then ask your colleagues to fill in the gaps. If this is too difficult initially, prompt them by giving the English equivalent of the missing words.
