Author Biographies
Gerdi Quist
Gerdi Quist grew up in the Netherlands. After completing a Teaching Degree in Art in Amsterdam, she moved to Canada before settling in London. On gaining a Master’s Degree in Language in Education at the Institute of Education, she took up a post as Lecturer in the Dutch Department of University College London, where she continues to lecture in Dutch and Cultural Studies. Her research interests include the interrelationship between language and culture in language teaching, and intercultural communication. She has written a variety of Dutch course books with Dennis Strik and has published a range of articles in academic journals on language and culture teaching.
Christine Sas
Christine Sas grew up in a Dutch family in Antwerp, Belgium. She took her degree in Germanic Philology and teacher training at the University of Antwerp, where she subsequently taught at the University Language Centre and the local Centre for Basic Education. When she moved to London, she taught Dutch IB to mother tongue speakers and Dutch as a foreign language in various businesses, whilst taking a Masters degree in Applied Language Studies in Education at King’s College London. This wide range of levels and experience is complemented by her current position at the University College London’s Dutch Department and the Foreign Office Language Centre. Her interests lie in discourse analysis, multilingualism and language politics (e.g. Brussels).
Dennis Strik
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Dennis Strik studied English literature & applied linguistics in Amsterdam before specialising in language acquisition at University College London, where he was a College Lecturer in Dutch for ten years. Dennis is the co-author, with Gerdi Quist, of a number of language books, including Teach Yourself Dutch and Teach Yourself Dutch Grammar, and currently divides his time between London and Amsterdam, working as a writer and translator.
