Chapter Fourteen - Additional Resources

PLAN FOR SESSION TO INTRODUCE ACTION RESEARCH

Stage One: 10 minutes

  1. Move into small groups.
  2. Each group must decide and agree one common problem that they are experiencing in their workplace.
Stage Two: 5-10 minutes

Identify some causes of the problem.

Stage Three: 10 minutes

Brainstorm a range of possible practical solutions to the problem, to address the real problem and the real cause(s).

Stage Four: 15 minutes
  1. From the range of possible practical solutions decide one of the solutions to the problems, perhaps what you consider to be the most suitable or best solution to the problem.
  2. Plan how to put the solution into practice.
Stage Five: 10 minutes

Identify some ‘success criteria’ by which you will be able to judge whether the solution has worked to solve the problem, i.e. how will you know whether the proposed solution, when it is put into practice, has been successful. Identify some practical criteria which will tell you how successful the project has been.

Plenary: 10 minutes

Pull out the key features to link to action research:

    • it works on, and tries to solve real, practitioner-identified problems of everyday practice;
    • it is collaborative and builds in practitioner involvement;
    • it seeks causes and tries to work on those causes;
    • the solutions are suggested by the practitioners involved;
    • it involves a divergent phases and a convergent phase;
    • it plans an intervention by the practitioners themselves;
    • it implements the intervention;
    • it evaluates the success of the intervention in solving the identified problem

SOME KEY FEATURES OF ACTION RESEARCH

  • It works on, and tries to solve, real, practitioner-identified problems of everyday practice;
  • It is collaborative and builds in shared involvement;
  • It seeks causes and tries to address those causes;
  • The solutions are suggested by the practitioners involved;
  • It involves a divergent phases and a convergent phase;
  • Practitioners decide and plan the intervention themselves;
  • It puts the planned intervention into practice;
  • It evaluates the success of the intervention in solving the identified problem.
