Chapter Four Introduction | Exemplar material for use with the Chapter 4 activities |
Example Questions | Bibliography

Chapter 4 is primarily concerned with the basic skills involved in the teaching of history and as such has a particular focus on the early weeks of the course. It deals almost exclusively with the nuts and bolts of skills such as the use of reading, exposition, questioning, discussion and presentations. Again, this almost exclusively practical approach complements the fuller theoretical slant of Chapter 4 in Learning to Teach History in the Secondary School.

In this chapter the use of the website for the activities is essential; neither are free-standing. The principal feature of the activities is to encourage you to try out different approaches, sometimes with different classes, and consider the merits and limitations.

Chapter 4 uses exemplar material on the trenches in World War I as a theme throughout the basic skills which are covered and material for this theme has been placed on the website.

While principally focused on the early period of the course that there is much, a more established trainee could revisit as some of the later parts of the chapter explore a range of approaches, which are again reflected in the website material. This exemplar material was devised and taught by Simon Goodwin.
