Chapter Five Introduction | Year 9 role play: Murder at Sarajevo |
Year 8 History Play, The French Revolution, ‘The Terror’ | Elizabethan role play: Elizabethan religion | Bibliography

Chapter 5 is the second chapter dealing with approaches to history teaching, but it has a single focus, the use of role play. Many trainees have found the considerable benefits that result from including the use of role play in the variety of approaches that can be included within a scheme, but many others are reluctant to make use of role play, perhaps worried about management factors. In this chapter, Steve Guscott tries to allay such fears and seeks to show the different ways in which role play can be used in the classroom as a means of consolidating knowledge, for developing historical skills as well as offering a means of assessment. In this he is able to expand considerably on the brief treatment of role play in Learning to Teach History in the Secondary School with practical examples. His work also complements rather than repeats the excellent work on role play by Ian Luff.

This website includes further examples of role plays, all tried and tested in the classroom. Some may question the ‘jokey’ nature of the first two examples given the seriousness of the issues involved, but there can be little doubt that they go down well in the classroom. The third item has a more detailed approach and offers a good model for trainees seeking to devise similar material.
