 Background to the source

This source, dated 1569, comes from Stephen Batemen, who was a British writer, translator of Latin texts and a preacher. The picture is from a book about the seven deadly sins.

It is a damning attack on the Catholic Church. It shows a monastery in the background, with the Cardinal riding on a dragon to symbolise evil. The priest or monk is sacrificing a lamb, which could stand for the Church or for Christ himself.

Using this source in the classroom

Pupils will need some background knowledge of criticisms of the Catholic Church.

Putting together a picture such as this as a jigsaw will encourage pupils to look closely at the detail. When they have finished the puzzle, you could ask them first of all what they can see in the puzzle, and, second, what the images represent. You could go on to consider why Batemen felt this way about the Catholic Church, and then discuss the views of Protestants. This may help them to understand that the changes in the English Church did not come about solely because of Henry VIII’s desire for a divorce.
