Guidance for the completion of stepped worksheets
- Your worksheet may contain four sections. Tell pupils which sections you wish them to complete. In the outline below, section 1 is designed for everyone. Some pupils may then skip Section 2 or even Section 3. You may allow them to choose where to start if you tell them about the differing levels of difficulty in each section. Less able will feel more satisfaction if they are given a target to complete Sections 1 and 2 only than if they embark on a sheet and only finish a few questions.
- Give guidance on how to set out answers, how much to write, and how much time will be allowed.
The worksheet
Section 1: Devise a task, such as highlighting, underlining, or labelling to guide pupils in their reading of the text or sources. This could be done as a class exercise. If you read the text together it ensures that weaker readers have understood it, and allows you to make any relevant points. E.g. Highlight in green the words in the sources which say positive things about Henry VIII. Highlight in pink the words that say negative things about him.
Section 2: Devise a few questions based on simple comprehension and inference (to target National Curriculum level 3). Each question should be based on one source or paragraph only for ease of reading. Make it clear which source or paragraph to look at. E.g. Read Source A. What reason does it give for …?
Section 3: Devise a few questions based on comparison and explanation or drawing together information from a number of sources (to target level 4). E.g. What do these sources tell us about …?
Section 4: Devise a few questions based on source analysis and evaluation / explanation of interpretations in sources / judgements about the information drawing on own knowledge etc (to target level 5 plus). E.g. How reliable is Source A? Give reasons for your answer.
